Latin American Short Stories Reading Group at VPL | Black History Month Special Edition

VLACC is thrilled to partner with the Vancouver Public Library for the first time on this special edition of our monthly reading group in honour of Black History Month. Join us for an engaging discussion led by Professor Ramón Ant. Victoriano-Martínez (Arturo), exploring Afro-Latin themes in the stories “Resins by Aurelia” and “Oso Blanco” by the Puerto Rican author Mayara Santos-Febres.

The stories are in English translations, and the discussion will also be led in English. No need to have any background in Latin American literature or culture. Everyone’s welcome!

Ramón Antonio Victoriano-Martinez (Arturo) was born in the Dominican Republic (1969), where he graduated with a B.A. in law at the Universidad Católica Santo Domingo (Class of 1994). He earned his Ph.D. in Hispanic and Latin American Literature from the University of Toronto in 2010. After graduation, he taught in the Department of Language Studies (University of Toronto Mississauga), the Caribbean Studies Program and the Latin American Studies Program (University of Toronto) from 2011 to 2019. His primary area of research is the literature and cultures of the Hispanic Caribbean, emphasizing issues of race, gender, diaspora and national belonging.
