Faces Of VLACC: Caro Selva

Meet Carolina Silva, a Colombian singer-songwriter whose original music combines the rich traditions of Latin America with contemporary global influences. Living in Canada has given Caro a broader sense of her identity, inspiring an exploration of the similarities and differences among the diverse Latin American cultures while staying rooted in her heritage. 

Caro is one of the talented artists part of the interdisciplinary project Camino y Despedida, showcased in collaboration with VLACC for the first time at last year’s STAND Festival. This deeply moving performance embodies the bittersweet feeling of leaving a familiar place behind and trying to fit an entire life, full of memories, places, and people, inside a suitcase. It combines dance, video projection, and live music to create a powerful and hopeful statement about migration. 

Through such opportunities, VLACC has given artists like Caro the space to grow and share their art while navigating the process of immigration. Reflecting on her experience, Caro shares: “As a newcomer artist, having the support of an organization that listens, preserves our connection to our roots, and highlights Latin identity is invaluable. Working with VLACC has helped me stay connected to my music and heritage during uncertain times”. For this reason, she believes that VLACC plays a vital role in amplifying Latin American voices, preserving cultural roots, and creating spaces for artists to connect, share, and collaborate. 

Apart from being involved with Camino y Despedida, Caro also plays in Colectivo Sur, a group of Latin American musicians blending their cultural and musical backgrounds. In addition to these collaborations, she continues to develop her solo project under the name Caro Selva.
