This month, we’ll explore two remarkable short stories: “Queen Doll” by Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes and “Love” by Brazilian author Clarice Lispector. Professor María Adelaida Escobar-Trujillo will lead the discussion, offering insights into the narratives and deeper themes within these influential works.

The stories are in English and original Spanish and Portuguese versions. The discussion will be led in English. No background in or experience with Latin American literature or culture is needed. Everyone’s welcome!

About the Facilitator
María Adelaida Escobar is originally from Colombia where she initially studied Philosophy and Literature to then pursue her studies in English Literature and Hispanic Literature and Cultures. Since 2016 she teaches Spanish language and literature at the University of British Colombia in Vancouver where she is a lecturer. Her main research interests are transcultural interactions, identity and gender dialogues in and between the cultures of Spain and Latin America. María has published short stories, poems and academic articles in Arte y literature hispanocanadiense, Historias de Montreal, Relatos Entrecruzados, Revista Zur, Perífrasis, Revista Cronopio, Hecho Teatral in September 2018 published her first novel Tiempo del Sur. Her last book, Nueve de Nueve, from 2024 is a collaboration and compiles the work of nine Colombian female writers. In 2023 her work and contribution to the Hispanic culture in Vancouver was recognized with the “Inspirational Award” in the category of Arts and Culture.
