VLACC is delighted to once again partner with VIFF’s New Spanish Cinema series — now in its 14-film edition and marking our third collaboration with this celebrated showcase of contemporary cinema from Spain.

Although the series focuses on Spanish filmmaking, The Blue Star (La Estrella Azul) offers a beautiful cross-cultural bridge: the story takes place in Argentina. It will naturally resonate with Spanish-speaking audiences and anyone drawn to Latin American music, storytelling, and landscapes.

About the film:

Set in the 1990s, The Blue Star follows Mauricio Aznar, a Zaragoza rock singer whose life is spiralling due to addiction, creative burnout, and personal turmoil. Seeking refuge, he travels across Argentina with nothing but a backpack, eventually reaching the country’s far north. There, he meets Don Carlos, an elder musician celebrated only within his local community. Through chacareras, zambas, and vidalas, Don Carlos becomes an unlikely mentor, guiding Mauricio toward artistic renewal and spiritual clarity.

Told with tenderness and musical depth, rising director Javier Macipe blurs fiction and documentary to craft a vivid meditation on friendship, creativity, and transformation.
