It is undeniable that this constant movement has defined our human experience as Latins in Vancouver. The series of live interviews and virtual studio visits “Trascendiendo Fronteras: exploring migration through art” seeks to introduce 4 different viewpoints on migration through the artworks of Vancouver based artists Pilar Mehlis, Guadalupe Martinez, Carlos Colin and Teo Monsalve. Tune in, to virtually meet the artists in these studio visits and see how they have responded to these universal questions with their practice.

The act of moving from one place to another whether seasonally or indefinitely is an act that unites animals and humans alike. The complex and natural phenomenon of migration unifies us despite our differences. What does it mean to be Latin outside our countries of origin? Why do we seek to homogenize and exoticize the Latin identity when in reality Latin America is a vast, diverse and complex group of territories and cultures?

About the Artist

Guadalupe Martinez is an interdisciplinary artist and educator interested in understanding the multiple and complex relationships between identity and place. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, she immigrated to Vancouver in 2008, where she lives and works -conscious of her presence on the unceded territories of the xwməθkwəy̓ əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples.

Placing the body at the centre of her practice, Martinez’s work often takes the form of installation, performance, and collaborative research with deep consideration for her personal and inherited histories. Through somatic practices and collaboration Martinez creates alternative spaces of learning and explores the potential for embodied research and love-actions to heal and decolonize the body-mind.

Her commitment to spirituality, teaching, and political awareness underlies the development of her work in diverse contexts and she has presented work in Canada, the US, Italy, Mexico and Argentina.

Moderated by: Miret Rodriguez is a curator and art advisor with experience in public and private projects in Canada, Germany, France and Mexico; her country of origin. In 2019 she moved back to Vancouver after a 5-year stay in Paris where she investigated the advances of the online art market during her master’s degree at ESC Dijon in Paris. She has worked for diverse cultural spaces for the past 10 years including museums and commercial art galleries. Miret is an advocate for art democratization. She believes that art accessibility is important for the growth of a community. She is an art history teacher and a co-founder of an art mediation company in Vancouver. With her diverse activities, she aims to help a wider public understand contemporary art, demystify the art world and bring people closer to art.
