Drum Circle and Screen Printing at Victoria Park (1425 Victoria Drive, Vancouver). Join us with your children for a morning of music and art where YOU will be the artists! Together, we will be exploring the infinite and rhythmic potential of recyclable materials.

Israel (Toto) Berriel will facilitate this drum circle designed for families to connect through sound and rhythm. If you know him, you can anticipate this is going to be absolutely fun. The morning will end with an interactive screen-printing activity led by Cuban artist Yaimel López. Prepare to be loud and take home a beautiful piece of art produced by all family members, from the smallest to the oldest. No previous experience or knowledge is required. About the facilitators:

Israel “Toto” Berriel is a traditional Afro-Cuban percussionist, vocalist, and educator. For twelve years, he played with the world’s best-known Rumba group, Los Muñequitos de Matanzas, where he mastered the Afro-Cuban repertoire. Toto is an exceptional performer and a naturally gifted vocalist with a distinctive sound. Although deeply rooted in Afro-Cuban traditions, he is also comfortable with jazz, soul, and funk. Originally from Matanzas, Cuba, Toto has toured worldwide and made Canada his home since 2001.

Yaimel López is a Cuban artist with more than 10-year experience in graphic design and illustration, Yaimel has been working in Cuba with institutions such as the Martin Luther King Jr. Center, La Casa de Las Américas, and the Cuban Institute of Cinema. Since making Vancouver his new home, he has been involved in projects with Burnaby neighbourhood House, Watari Counselling & Support Services Society, and VLAFF. His artistic focus includes editorial design and illustrations for magazines, books, and social media, poster design for cultural events, logos, infographics and motion graphics. In addition to his designer-illustrator career, Yaimel’s personal artwork has been exhibited in Cuba, New Zeeland and the United States as part of group exhibitions.
