Join us for a meaningful celebration of Black voices and perspectives in Latin storytelling! This Black History Month, VLACC is partnering with the Vancouver Public Library (VPL) to present two powerful films showcasing stories of Afro-Latinidad. Following each screening, the storyteller and community organizer, Coral Santana, will lead a thought-provoking moderated discussion.
🎬 Pelo Malo (dir. Mariana Rondón) – Venezuela, 2013 [n Spanish with English subtitles]
A Venezuelan boy’s (Samuel Lange Zambrano) desire to straighten his curly hair leads to friction between himself and his desperate single mother (Samantha Castillo).
Discussion themes: anti-Blackness and homophobia in Latin America and the white-washing of Latinx childhood.
Afro-Latinx Cineclub will take place on the stolen, ancestral, and occupied traditional lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
Coral Santana is an Afro-Dominican storyteller, community organizer and equity consultant for Film and TV based in K’emk’emeláy̓ (Vancouver). They have developed cultural programming focused on exploring Blackness, Queerness and Latinidad for various organizations, including the Museum of Anthropology and the Vancouver Art Gallery.Coral holds a BA in Film Studies with a minor in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia.
