Join us for this meaningful celebration of Black voices and perspectives in Latinx storytelling! This Black History Month, VLACC is partnering with the Vancouver Public Library (VPL) to present two powerful films showcasing stories of Afro-Latinidad. Following each screening, a thought-provoking moderated discussion will be led by the storyteller and community organizer, Coral Santana.

🎬 Dólares de Arena (dir. Laura Amelia Guzmán and Israel Cárdenas) – Dominican Republic, 2014 Sand Dollars, in Spanish with English subtitles.

An older European woman becomes enchanted with a young Dominican woman who must struggle to make ends meet. Love brings a flow of entanglements in a drama that unfolds like palm trees in an irresistible storm.

Discussion themes: portrayals of Blackness and queerness in Latinx cinema, the intersections of femininity and Blackness, and the impact of class and whiteness on queer dynamics in Latin America.

Afro-Latinx Cineclub will take place on the stolen, ancestral, and occupied traditional lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

Coral Santana is an Afro-Dominican storyteller, community organizer and equity consultant based in K’emk’emeláy̓ (Vancouver). They have developed cultural programming focused on exploring Blackness, Queerness and Latinidad for various organizations, including the Museum of Anthropology and the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Coral holds a BA in Film Studies with a minor in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia.
