FACES OF VLACC | Jaqueline (Yaky) Sánchez

Meet Jaqueline (Yaky) Sánchez, an enthusiastic VLACC volunteer from Mexico. Those who have had the pleasure of working alongside Yaky highlight how her vibrant energy contributes to VLACC’s mission of creating a welcoming environment for everyone to experience Latin American arts and culture. Her warmth and openness provide community members and fellow volunteers with a sense of familiarity that is deeply missed by those who migrate.

For Yaky, who arrived in Canada two years ago, VLACC has been an essential resource in helping her settle in Vancouver and become an active part of the Latin American community: “VLACC has been like a small big family for me. They have taught me a lot throughout my time as a volunteer, and I have met many people that I now consider my friends.”

Among the many events that Yaky has participated in, last year’s Verano de colores –VLACC’s yearly summer programming for families interested in preserving their Latin American roots–,  and the premiere of Re:Location Season 2, stand out for her. Reflecting on the importance of such events, she notes that “it gives us courage and recognition.” Beyond offering the opportunity to meet new people and develop collaborative skills through volunteering, VLACC exposes both newcomers and those who have been living in Vancouver for a few years to unique spaces such as the VIFF Centre, the THIS Gallery, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, the Vancouver Public Library, and several other venues at the heart of the city’s arts and culture scene. Being able to access and develop personal connections to physical spaces is a key factor in creating a sense of belonging and one of VLACC’s underlying contributions.

If Yaky’s experience resonates with you and you are interested in volunteering with VLACC, please send your resumé to volunteer@vlacc.ca
